Château de la Brède
The Château de La Brède is a medieval Gothic castle in La Brède, Gironde, France, surrounded by water-filled moats and set within an English garden in the Bordeaux region. Built from 1306 and altered over centuries, it retained its fortress character and was the birthplace and home of the philosopher Montesquieu, whose library and bedroom are preserved for visitors.

The shape it held in its prime.
A compact grey-limestone fortress set within a continuous water-filled moat: a rectangular main block with a crenellated parapet, flanked by cylindrical corner towers capped by steep conical slate roofs. The façade shows rows of mullioned windows and simple rectangular openings, a low stone terrace with planted beds at moat level, and a small timber-framed gabled service wing on the left. The castle sits amid parkland and vineyards, its stone walls reflected in the surrounding water.
