The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on the Großer Hausberg above the Selke valley, the castle in its prime comprised an extensive red-brown brick curtain wall circuit with a substantial central bergfried tower, a chapel and adjacent living ranges with steep pitched roofs. A broad dry moat and outer earthen rampart (Vorwall) encircled the site for over 500 metres. Rooflines were of timber with tiled coverings and the complex occupied the hilltop plateau with views down to the river.
