Otzberg Castle
Otzberg Castle (Veste Otzberg) is a medieval hilltop fortress in Hesse, Germany, sited on the summit of the Otzberg above the village of Hering. The ensemble is dominated by a Romanesque cylindrical bergfried and a ring of double concentric, oval curtain walls reworked in the 16th century; surviving domestic buildings (palas, commandant's house, barracks) occupy the inner ward. Today the site is restored and houses a local museum and municipal functions.

Otzberg presents as an oval, double-concentric stone fortress crowning a wooded hill, with a plain white-painted cylindrical bergfried rising from the inner ward. The inner buildings cluster against the inner curtain: a long palas with a steep slate roof and a stepped gable, and a large, rectangular commandant's house with rows of dormer or mansard windows. The outer and inner walls are battered stone with a grassed wall-walk; the northern slope falls away to the village of Hering.

Veste Otzberg crowns the summit of the Otzberg in the Odenwald at 367 metres. On its northern slopes lies the village of Hering, which grew out of the castle's lower ward as a castellan's settlement — the histories of fortress and village are closely interwoven. The silhouette is dominated by a Romanesque cylindrical bergfried within double concentric, oval curtain walls.
In 1390 Fulda Abbey sold Otzberg and Hering, with half of Umstadt and the Hanau fief — holdings by then worth 33,000 guilders — to Count Palatine Rupert II. Later, in the dispute over the Landshut succession, Emperor Maximilian imposed the imperial ban on Count Palatine Philip for a breach of the Landfrieden.
Weapon technology moved on: the castle could no longer simply be held by castellans, and the 16th-century double walls give it the character of a fortress of the artillery age — typical castle features such as towers are entirely missing. Restored, with palas, commandant's house and barracks surviving in the inner ward, it today houses a local museum and municipal functions.
