Rochlitz Castle
Rochlitz Castle (Schloss Rochlitz) is a historic hill-top palace in Rochlitz, Saxony, built on a medieval imperial site and remodelled into a margravial schloss from the 14th century onward. The complex includes a main palace on a rocky spur, two prominent towers, and lower baileys including the Vorburg with St. Peter's Church; today the castle houses a museum.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Zwickau Mulde, the palace presents a long rectangular main block of pale ashlar and rubble with several Romanesque wings and a steep pitched roofline. Two prominent, square tower-cores rise from the western end, each capped by steep, pointed slate roofs. Curtain walls descend the hill to flanking lower baileys; the eastern lower bailey holds St. Peter's Church. Materials read as light grey-brown masonry with slate roofing; overall the site is a continuous fortified-palatial silhouette.

Rochlitz Castle was built on the site of an imperial castle erected in the second half of the 10th century, which fell into the possession of the Wettin margraves in 1143. Its appearance, which includes several Romanesque wings, owes much to its remodelling into a margravial schloss in the fourth quarter of the 14th century, with further conversions and additions at the end of the 15th and in the 16th centuries.
In those later centuries the castle became a secondary residenz, dower house and hunting lodge for the Wettin family, and it served as residence for members of the Saxon princely house eight times. From the 18th century it was an administrative centre, housing the justice department and district court, and in 1852 it became a gaol — a use that necessitated considerable alteration.
The complex comprises the main palace on its rocky spur in the west of the town of Rochlitz, two prominent towers, and lower baileys including the Vorburg with St Peter's Church. A museum founded in 1892 was gradually expanded and today takes up almost the entire castle.
