The shape it held in its prime.
A compact rectangular inner castle set on a raised rocky base, enclosed by high pale dressed-stone curtain walls and four robust corner towers (one at each corner). The inner castle opens onto a large rectangular courtyard; the second floor contained the long Knights' Hall. An outer concentric wall and a lowered outer bailey with an Italian-style rounded bastion (rondelle) protect the northwest side. A single causeway bridge crosses the dry moat to the gate; roofs are steep and covered with dark tiles, and the masonry is a light beige to grey stone.
