Castello del Catajo
Castello del Catajo is a large patrician rural palace near Battaglia Terme in the province of Padua, rebuilt and elaborated from 1570 and completed in 1573 by the Obizzi family. The complex combines a fortress-like rectangular palazzo, an entrance courtyard with high pedestals and an Elephant fountain, extensive gardens, and interiors decorated with a continuous cycle of historical and battle-scene frescoes by Giambattista Zelotti. The site is preserved and open to the public.

A broad, four-storey rectangular palazzo of pale ashlar or plastered masonry with a continuous crenellated parapet along the roofline and small, regularly spaced rectangular windows. The main block sits back from a formal entrance reached by a long three-arched stone bridge; tall drum pedestals topped by classical statues mark the approach. A lower wing with small domed lanterns adjoins the entrance court, which is dominated by a Baroque elephant fountain; trees and formal gardens enclose the house.

Castello del Catajo began as a simple villa, rebuilt and extravagantly enlarged in the manner of a feudal castle from 1570 by Marquess Pio Enea I degli Obizzi, of an Italian noble family of French origin, and completed in 1573. The complex pairs a fortress-like rectangular palazzo with an entrance courtyard and Elephant fountain, extensive gardens, and interiors frescoed with a continuous cycle of historical and battle scenes by Giambattista Zelotti.
In the 19th century the estate passed to Francis V, Duke of Modena, who left it to Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Inherited during the First World War by Charles I, the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, it was sequestered as war reparations by the Italian state, which sold it in 1926 to the Dalla Francesca family — who open it to the public today.
