Castle of Charles V
The Castle of Charles V (Castello Carlo Quinto) is a 16th-century fortress in Lecce, Italy, extensively reinforced in 1539 under Charles V to the designs of Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya. It retains a compact quadrangular plan centred on a large square keep and today houses municipal cultural offices and event spaces.

A compact quadrangular fortress of pale Lecce limestone ashlar dominated by a massive square keep rising above a broad inner courtyard. Smooth, lightly weathered stone walls pierced by small rectangular windows and ground‑floor round‑arched loggias frame the paved courtyard; the main tower shows a pronounced band of corbels/machicolations beneath its flat summit. Rooflines are essentially flat with simple parapets; barrel‑vaulted recesses and heavy stone portals open from the courtyard into covered halls. Masonry is intact and clean at its prime.

Originally constructed during the Middle Ages, the castle of Lecce was owned in the 14th century by the Orsini del Balzo family — who, according to legend, kept a white bear in the moat as both a status symbol and a deterrent to intruders. In 1539 Charles V ordered its extensive reinforcement, carried out by the military architect Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya; the Chapel of the Trinity and a Benedictine monastery were demolished to make way for the fortress.
Though primarily defensive, the castle served civic and cultural roles: one of its halls became a theatre in the 18th century, and from 1870 to 1979 it functioned as a military district. Its interior retains carved capitals, a grand hall with large stained-glass windows and massive stone columns; today it houses Lecce's Department of Cultural Affairs and hosts cultural events.
