Malaspina Castle
Malaspina Castle sits above Massa, Italy, on a rocky hill overlooking the surrounding plain and part of the Tyrrhenian coast. It was long the seat of the local marquises and later used as a military fortress and prison until the mid-20th century; it has since been restored and reopened to the public.

A compact fortified complex perched on a white-grey limestone crag: a large rectangular stone keep with a continuous crenellated parapet dominates the skyline, joined to a long palazzo-like wing with a tiled roof and a row of open arches (a loggia). Rounded tower fragments and low curtain walls cling to the cliffside, with narrow slit windows in thick masonry. Terraced slopes and olive groves descend the rock; walls are uniformly pale, weathered stone, battlements intact.
