Castle of Gorizia
Gorizia Castle is an 11th-century fortification on the hill overlooking the city of Gorizia in northeastern Italy. Built and expanded in the medieval period, it retains a high surrounding curtain wall with several rounded towers and a prominent cylindrical keep; it now houses the Museum of the Middle Ages of Gorizia after 20th-century restoration.

Perched atop a wooded hill, the castle reads as a continuous grey-brown stone curtain wall pierced by regularly spaced crenellations and small slit windows, punctuated by several cylindrical towers and a larger circular keep near the highest point. Rooflines are low behind the battlements; masonry is rough-faced local stone. The plan is compact and oval on the hilltop, with terraces and a central open courtyard where the stump of an older tower is visible at ground level.

The construction of Gorizia Castle, on the hill that dominates the city, can be dated to around 1146 — the year the title of Count of Gorizia first appears, given to Henry IV of Spanheim, which presumes a fortification already stood on the site. The medieval House of Gorizia was named after the castle.
Within a generation it passed to the related counts in the Puster Valley, who thereafter took the title of Counts of Gorizia — testimony to the castle's importance. At the death of Leonhard, the last count, in the spring of 1500, the county and its castle became the property of Maximilian I of Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor.
Twentieth-century restorers chose to return the castle to a medieval look, discarding the white plastering it had acquired during the Renaissance. Behind its high curtain wall, rounded towers and cylindrical keep, it now houses the Museum of the Middle Ages of Gorizia.
