Castle of Moncalieri
The Castle of Moncalieri is a large brick palace on a hill in Moncalieri, Piedmont, that served as a residence of the House of Savoy and is part of the UNESCO Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. The present building is a horseshoe-shaped complex with multiple towers, formal southern gardens and inner courts; its historic state rooms are open to visitors.

Horseshoe-shaped brick palace facing south, with four massive square towers at the corners and five-storey side wings linked by robust buttresses; two parallel minor buildings create inner courts. The southern façade opens onto a giardino all'italiana and retains two small cylindrical towers from the older castle. Rows of regular rectangular windows, arched ground-floor loggias, a low tiled roofline and tall plane trees beside the outer wall define the silhouette.

The first structure at Moncalieri was a fortress built by Thomas I of Savoy around 1100, on a hill commanding the main southern access to Turin. In the mid-15th century Yolanda of Valois, wife of Duke Amadeus IX, turned the fortress into a pleasure residence.
Returned to Victor Emmanuel I and later to his distant nephew Charles Albert of Sardinia, Prince of Carignano, the castle became the residence where young princes of the family studied. The horseshoe-shaped brick complex, with its towers, inner courts and formal southern gardens, is listed by UNESCO among the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, designated in 1997. Since 1921 it has been home to the 1st Battalion of the Carabinieri, though the historic rooms can be freely visited.
