Mole Antonelliana

The Mole Antonelliana is a monumental tower-building in central Turin, Italy, designed by Alessandro Antonelli and completed in 1889. Rising to about 167.5 metres from a broad neoclassical base, its tapering dome and layered spire dominated the city skyline; the building later became home to the Museo Nazionale del Cinema.

A vast square base with a neoclassical hexastyle pronaos and long colonnaded loggias supports a high, convex masonry dome with thin, slightly curved walls and regularly spaced vertical divisions. Above the dome sits a two-storey, colonnaded Tempietto and then a circular lantern; the tapering octagonal spire rises from successive small circular terraces and colonnades to a high pinnacle topped in 1889 by a gilded copper winged genius. Pale stone and granite columns contrast with glazed semicircular clerestory windows; overall silhouette is tall and needle-like.
