Thirlestane Castle
Thirlestane Castle is a historic fortified residence on Castle Hill near Lauder in the Scottish Borders, long held by the Maitland family and seat of the Earls of Lauderdale. The fabric combines a late-16th/17th-century keep remodelled in the 1670s with substantial 19th-century wings and service ranges; it sits within extensive parkland and is open to the public under a charitable trust.

The shape it held in its prime.
A broad, symmetrical stone façade of warm reddish-brown rubble with dressed red sandstone surrounds; a central multi-storey rectangular keep projects forward with a pair of large rounded front towers rising either side, each capped by steep slate conical roofs, and a higher central roof. Low flanking wings extend to left and right with steep slate roofs and dormer windows. A wide external stair and balustraded terrace lead from a gravel forecourt on raised Castle Hill into parkland.
