Castle of Xabier
The Castle of Xavier (Castillo de Javier) is a hilltop medieval fortress in Xavier, Navarre, Spain, traditionally known as the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier. The complex comprises several linked buildings: an old tower of homage (San Miguel), a main fortified chapel-tower (Kristo Santua), polygonal flanking towers and a surrounding curtain wall; an adjacent 19th-century basilica was later added by the Jesuits. The site functions today as a historic monument and museum.

Perched on a rounded grassy motte, the castle presents a semicircular stone curtain wall with crenellations enclosing an inner bailey; inside rises a central rectangular keep with a crenellated crown and smaller flanking towers at the cardinal points. The main chapel-tower (Kristo Santua) projects from one side with high buttressed masonry, tall narrow Gothic windows and tiled roofs. Stone is warm beige-brown masonry; the base slopes to a road circling the hill and a paved forecourt beside the chapel.

Built in the 10th century on a hill in Navarre, the castle was won by Sancho VII of Navarre around 1223: an Aragonese noble had pledged Xavier as warranty on a 9,000-sol loan from the king and could not repay, so the stronghold passed to Sancho — one of several castles he took from the Crown of Aragon in this way. In 1236 King Theobald I handed it to Adán de Sada.
Before the Spanish conquest of Iberian Navarre the castle belonged to Maria Azpilikueta of the Baztan Valley, married to Joanes Jatsukoa. Their son, born and raised here as a child of the Lords of Xavier, was Saint Francis Xavier, who took his surname from the place; the family defended the independence of the kingdom.
