The shape it held in its prime.
The castle is dominated by a massive cylindrical keep with a continuous circular parapet at the west end, linked to high rectangular curtain walls and a sequence of square towers to the east. Masonry is of coursed grey stone with narrow vertical window openings and visible garderobe chutes built into the walls. The fortification sits on a steep grassy ridge with a drop to the river below; a raised bailey is enclosed by battlemented walls and a path skirts the base to the north.
