Kenfig Castle
Kenfig Castle is a medieval Norman castle near the lost town of Kenfig in Wales, built around the 12th century and substantially rebuilt in the early 14th century. In its prime it comprised a free-standing square keep, a surrounding curtain wall with a large gatehouse and a south bailey; by the late 15th century it was abandoned and later buried by encroaching sand dunes.

A 14-metre square, free-standing stone keep dominates the plan, with dressed-stone angled buttresses at each corner and at the middle of each face; the keep's main doorway is set at the southwest corner. A curtain wall linked to a large gatehouse faces south toward the borough, enclosing a bailey protected by a bank and ditch. The castle stands on a raised earthen mound beside a river to the west and north; walls and towers are of local grey-brown masonry and slate roofs on ancillary buildings.

Kenfig Castle came to prominence after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Wales in the late 11th century and was in its day an important Norman stronghold, built by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, in the early 12th century. Substantially rebuilt in the early 14th century, at its peak it comprised a free-standing square keep, a curtain wall with a large gatehouse, and a south bailey.
By the late 15th century the castle, near the lost town of Kenfig, had been abandoned; encroaching sand dunes later buried it, and it survives as a ruin in Bridgend County Borough.
