Two-storey stone gatehouse with a tall pointed (ogival) central entrance and a large narrow Gothic window high above, flanked by low curtain walls that enclose a compact grassy courtyard. Masonry is roughly coursed grey limestone with visible rubble infill where buttresses and a corner tower joined the wall. In its prime the gatehouse had a defended upper floor linked to a crenellated wall-walk, an attached southern great hall on the first floor, and a protective ditch and drawbridge at the approach.

Barry Castle was established as a wooden ringwork in the 12th century by the de Barry (Barri) family, earth and timber fortifications roughly 35 metres across behind a protective ditch. In the late 13th century stone buildings were added at the north-east and north-west corners, connected by defensive walls that enclosed a small courtyard between them.

A 14th-century expansion added a southern great hall connected to a gatehouse and a corner tower. The hall occupied the first floor, with a fireplace in the north wall and possible direct access by external wooden stairs; the gatehouse had a pointed portal with portcullis, double doors and a drawbridge, and the small room above the gate passage may have served as a chapel. The ruined two-storey gatehouse and adjacent hall walls survive in the Romilly district of Barry, Grade II* listed and open to the public.
