The shape it held in its prime.
A low, roughly rectangular Roman fort of squared stone curtain walls and surviving earthwork banks sits on a grassy spur above rolling pastures; a reconstructed section of 2nd-century curtain wall shows courses of roughly dressed local stone blocks with a slightly raised top. The interior is an open grassy parade area with traces of foundations; the surrounding landscape is open moorland falling away to distant Snowdonia ridges under wide, often cloudy skies.
Its story
The story of Tomen y Mur.
Tomen y Mur began as a Roman auxiliary fort, constructed in AD 78 during the North Wales campaigns of the governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola, on an isolated spur northeast of Llyn Trawsfynydd beside the Roman road known as Sarn Helen. Rebuilt in stone in the early 2nd century, it was occupied until it was abandoned around AD 140.
In the 11th century the Normans reused part of the site for a motte, which still stands within the fort's earthworks alongside a reconstructed section of the 2nd-century curtain wall. The site is a scheduled monument managed by Snowdonia National Park Authority.
