Walter Smith(1948–2021)
Walter Ferguson Smith, OBE
The dignified Lanarkshire man who won seven Scottish titles in a row with Rangers, took them to a European final, and carried the Smith name through the Scottish game with universal respect.
Walter Ferguson Smith was born on 24 February 1948 in Lanark and raised in Carmyle on the eastern edge of Glasgow. As a player he was a steady, unflashy defender with Dundee United and Dumbarton, the kind of career that teaches a man the trade from the inside. His gift was for coaching, and it was large.
He learned it under Jim McLean at Dundee United and on the Scotland staff, and in 1986 became assistant to Graeme Souness at Rangers. When Souness left in 1991, Smith took over and built one of the great runs in Scottish football. Rangers were champions of Scotland in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997, seven titles without a break at the heart of the club's nine-in-a-row, with Scottish Cups and League Cups alongside them. In 1992 and 1993 his side went unbeaten through the Champions League group stage, the famous Battle of Britain with Leeds United among the results.
After a spell managing Everton he took charge of the Scotland national team in 2004 and revived a struggling side, beating France home and away in qualifying for Euro 2008 and lifting Scotland sharply up the world rankings before Rangers called him back.
His second spell was as successful as the first in its way. He led Rangers to the UEFA Cup final in 2008, the run to Manchester gripping Scottish football, and won the Scottish Premier League in 2009, 2010 and 2011 with further domestic cups. He finished as a club chairman, his standing in the game complete.
Walter Smith was admired across Scottish football well beyond his own support: a calm, principled, formidable manager whose word was good and whose record was immense. His death in October 2021 was mourned by the whole game. The Smith name has carried many great Scots; few wore it with more quiet authority.
