What does the Lennox name mean?
From the ancient Scottish region of Lennox — covering modern Dunbartonshire, with parts of Stirling, Perth and Renfrew.
The history of Clan Lennox
Lennox was one of the ancient divisions of Scotland, comprising the present county of Dunbartonshire with parts of Stirling, Perth and Renfrew. The sheriffdom of the district was granted to Mathew, Earl of Lennox, in 1511.
Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley (1545–1567), second son of the Earl of Lennox, was created Duke of Albany. In 1565 he married Queen Mary, who had him proclaimed King of Scotland.
The marriage proved unhappy. Darnley's part in the murder of Rizzio estranged him from the queen, and on the point of leaving the country he was murdered at Kirk-o'-Field in 1567. He was the father of the future James VI and I.
