'Son of Orti' or Fortún — from a Basque and Navarrese given name tied to the Latin fortunius, 'fortunate'. One of the patronymics that carries a clear Basque stamp.
The history of Ortiz
Ortiz comes down from the Navarrese name Orti or Fortún, 'the fortunate one', and marks the deep Basque contribution to the Spanish name-stock — the Basque country being the one corner of Iberia the Romans and Moors never fully absorbed. Like Rivera, it put down its strongest American roots in Puerto Rico. A fortunate name, carried far.
