Bataclan

The Bataclan is a 19th‑century theatre at 50 Boulevard Voltaire in Paris, designed by Charles Duval and opened in 1865 as a café‑concert in a Chinoiserie style. Originally containing a ground‑floor café and theatre with a large first‑floor dance hall, it later became a famous venue for popular and rock music. The building was renovated and reopened after damage in the 20th and 21st centuries and remains an active performance hall.

A three‑storey façade in exuberant Chinoiserie colours: painted geometric and floral panels in red, yellow and green on the upper theatre storey, tall arched windows with deep red frames, and a heavier stone base at street level with broad arched entrance doors. Above, an attic storey punctured by dormer windows and a circular oculus crowns the composition; originally the roof read as a pagoda with upturned eaves. Surfaces are smooth painted stucco over a masonry ground floor, scale intimate to the boulevard frontage.
