La Coupole
Coupole d'Helfaut
La Coupole is a Second World War German bunker complex built into a disused chalk quarry near Helfaut–Wizernes, dominated by a vast reinforced‑concrete dome. Constructed in 1943–44 to house V‑2 rockets and an extensive tunnel network, it was damaged by Allied bombing, never entered service, and today has been restored and opened as a museum with public access to tunnels and the space beneath the dome.

A huge low hemispherical shell of reinforced concrete, about 71 metres across and several metres thick, sits within the rim of a chalk quarry. The dome’s grey surface shows vertical form lines and weathering; a thick concrete skirt (Zerschellerplatte) with massive buttresses steps down the quarry face. A cube‑shaped concrete ventilation/shaft building stands on the hilltop beside the dome. The quarry floor is terraced with remaining railbeds and blocked tunnel mouths; surfaces bear blast scars, streaks and lichen.
