The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is a large medieval monastic complex founded in 1101 near Chinon in the Loire Valley. Its central features are the abbey church and surrounding conventual ranges — dormitories, cloisters and administrative buildings — historically housing the Order of Fontevraud and, later, serving other uses.

The shape it held in its prime.

A sprawling, enclosed monastic complex in pale Angevin limestone with long steep slate roofs and multiple two-storey ranges around a rectangular cloister. The abbey church presents a high gabled nave, a large central tower above the crossing, and a simple west portal. Arcaded cloister galleries open onto a grassed quadrangle; surrounding buildings include polygonal turrets and continuous slate rooflines. The whole sits inside low enclosing walls with paved courtyards and service ranges.
