La Madeleine

Église de la Madeleine

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene (La Madeleine) is a large 19th-century Neoclassical parish church in Paris built in the form of a peripteral Greek/Roman temple with a surrounding colonnade. Its exterior is dominated by a massive Corinthian portico and triangular pediment; the interior is a single long vaulted space divided into three domed bays with rich polychrome marble, mosaics and monumental 19th-century sculpture. The building was completed and consecrated in the mid-1840s.

What La Madeleine looked like in its prime.

Massive rectangular temple block in pale Parisian limestone, encircled by a peripteral colonnade of 52 fluted Corinthian columns about 20 m high; an octostyle south portico with broad stone steps leads to a deep recess and oversized bronze doors beneath a high entablature and a triangular pediment crowded with a high-relief Last Judgment group. The scale is monumental, the stone warm cream in daylight, set on a raised platform in an urban square framed by Haussmannian facades.
