Potsdamer Platz

Potsdamer Platz is a major public square and traffic intersection at the historic centre of Berlin where five principal streets converge. By the 1920s it had become one of Europe's busiest urban hubs, surrounded by grand hotels, department stores, cafes, theatres and major rail and U‑bahn links. The site was heavily damaged in World War II, divided during the Cold War, and redeveloped after reunification.

What Potsdamer Platz looked like in its prime.

A star-shaped, open traffic square where five wide boulevards meet; tramlines and motor traffic thread between broad pavements lined with multi-storey commercial façades. The dominant visual elements are the long granite-and-plate-glass frontage of the Wertheim department store along Leipziger Straße, the long, low massing of Haus Vaterland with its 35 m dome at the Stresemann end, freestanding classical Schinkel gatehouses, horizontal traffic-signal tower, and dense street-level shopfronts, signage and awnings.
