Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi
The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the principal church of the Franciscan order in Assisi, built into a hillside together with the adjoining friary (Sacro Convento). The complex comprises two consecrated churches (Upper and Lower), a crypt where Saint Francis is interred, a freestanding Romanesque bell tower and extensive buttressing provided by the friary buildings.

Perched on a steep hill, the basilica and adjoining Sacro Convento form a long, stone-built complex with pale pink-beige masonry and terracotta tiled roofs. The Upper Church displays a whitewashed, two-tier façade with a central Gothic doorway, a large rose window and a simple gable; to its left rises a square Romanesque campanile. Massive angled retaining walls and arcaded friary buildings buttress the slope; rows of narrow pointed Gothic windows, polygonal apse, and forested valley below complete the silhouette.
