Siena Cathedral

Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in Siena, Italy, built from the early 13th century and expanded through the 14th century and later. The building is noted for its striped polychrome marble exterior, Gothic façade and tall campanile; its interior contains major artworks, a hexagonal dome and rich marble decoration. Construction of a large extension halted with the Black Death; the cathedral complex today remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Siena.

A broad, gabled Gothic façade faced in polychrome marble with red accents rises above a wide flight of steps; three ornately carved portals sit beneath a large circular rose window. The building’s exterior and campanile are banded in alternating white and greenish-black marble. A hexagonal dome with a gilded lantern tops the crossing. The façade is crowded with carved statues, pinnacles and lunettes; the cathedral occupies a paved piazza with visitors on the steps.
