The building is noted for its striped polychrome marble exterior, Gothic façade and tall campanile; its interior contains major artworks, a hexagonal dome and rich marble decoration. Construction of a large extension halted with the Black Death; the cathedral complex today remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Siena.
