Mamertine Prison

The Mamertine Prison (ancient Tullianum) is an ancient Roman jail and two-level dungeon set into the northeastern slope of the Capitoline Hill in the Comitium. In antiquity it served as a short-term holding cell and site of executions for prominent prisoners; the lower level contains a stone-lined pit with a spring-fed cistern. The site is preserved beneath later churches and can be visited today.

A compact, partly-subterranean Roman detention complex built into the Capitoline slope: rough tufa and travertine ashlar, a low stone entrance facing the Comitium, a single upper holding chamber above a circular stone-lined shaft, and a deep lower pit with a permanent spring pooling in the floor. Exterior scale is modest against the hill and adjacent public buildings; interior surfaces are damp, dark stone with worn edges and tool marks visible on masonry.
