The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum or Forum Magnum) is the rectangular public plaza at the heart of ancient Rome, enclosed by temples, basilicas, triumphal arches and government buildings between the Palatine and Capitoline hills. For centuries it served as the city's political, judicial, religious and commercial centre and was lined by colonnades, podiums and paved processional ways. Today it survives as an extensive archaeological site of ruins and scattered standing monuments.

Low grassy fill and excavated foundations lie between raised colonnaded walkways, with larger vaulted halls (basilicas) and a triple-arched monument closing the plaza. Stone colours range from pale white marble to warm tufa and orange-brown brick, with steep stone steps to podiums.
