Stadio Olimpico

Stadio Olimpico is a large multi-purpose sports stadium in Rome's Foro Italico complex, home to S.S. Lazio and A.S. Roma and seating over 70,000 people. Originally begun in 1928 and rebuilt several times, it was comprehensively renovated and roofed for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and continues to host football, athletics and concerts.

What Stadio Olimpico looked like in its prime.

An enormous oval bowl sunk slightly below street level, the stadium reads as concentric tiers of concrete seating clad in blue, capped by a continuous white Teflon–fibreglass tensile roof hung from an outer steel ring and radial cables. The roof ring sits on a dozen prominent steel pillars and four external concrete stair towers. The long straight grandstands (Tribuna Monte Mario and Tribuna Tevere) oppose two semicircular curving ends (Curva Nord and Curva Sud). The complex sits among pine trees of Monte Mario and the Foro Italico grounds.
