Torre Grossa

Torre Grossa is the tallest medieval tower in San Gimignano, Tuscany, built in 1310 and rising above the town's roofs to 54 metres. It forms part of the cluster of civic buildings on the main square and was historically a symbol of municipal power.

A tall, square-plan stone tower of pale grey-beige ashlar rises straight from the packed terracotta roofs; its smooth vertical shaft is punctured by a few narrow arched windows and irregular small openings, with patches of vegetation in joints. Near the top a projecting band of carved corbels supports a raised terrace and an open, arched loggia/belfry with a small pointed stone pinnacle, the tower dominating the low red-roofed town and Tuscan countryside beyond.
