Colosseum
The Colosseum is an ancient Roman elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, completed under Titus and enlarged under Domitian. It served as the city's principal arena for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles and is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built. Substantially ruined by earthquakes and stone-robbing, the surviving structure still presents its characteristic rings of arches and interior seating rings.

An enormous oval stone amphitheatre of pale travertine, tuff and brick-faced concrete with three stacked arcaded stories capped by a continuous attic; repeated rounded arches and engaged piers encircle the full circumference. At its prime the outer wall is continuous and full-height, the seating rings rise steeply from the central oval performance area, and vaulted service arcades occupy the substructure. Colouration: warm beige and pink-beige stone with darker brick infill and a light-packed arena surface.
