Temple of Venus and Roma

Tempio di Venere e Roma

The Temple of Venus and Roma was a monumental double-cella temple on the Velian Hill, built under Hadrian and dedicated to Venus Felix and Roma Aeterna. It occupied a very large raised podium between the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum and contained two enormous back-to-back cult chambers, each with a tetrastyle entrance and a monumental seated cult statue.

What Temple of Venus and Roma looked like in its prime.

A vast rectangular raised podium (about 145 × 100 m) topped by a long, flat paved terrace and broad central stair; the temple core is formed by two large, back-to-back cellae set on the plateau and fronted by decastyle (ten-column) short façades and double colonnades along the long sides. Exterior walls show massive brick-faced masonry beneath marble cladding; rows of white marble or granite columns ring the platform, and the plateau is punctuated by broad stone steps and paved approaches.
