Pompeii

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Largely preserved under volcanic ash, its streets, public buildings and private houses survive as an extensive archaeological site that shows Roman urban life.

A broad rectangular forum paved with large stone slabs sits amid low brick and tufa walls punctuated by fluted stone columns on raised stepped podia. Red-brown brick arches and standing marble columns rise against a clear blue sky with Mount Vesuvius visible on the horizon. Surfaces show plaster and painted fragments; many roofs are gone exposing colonnades, courtyards and paved streets, scale ranging from single-room houses to large public halls.
