What Orvieto Cathedral looked like in its prime.

A three-gabled marble façade faced with gilded mosaics and dense carved bas-reliefs, dominated by a large polygonal rose window framed by rows of sculpted heads and statuary; side walls striped in alternating bands of white travertine and blue-grey basalt. The plan is cruciform with a long flagstone nave, cylindrical columns banded in dark and light stone, a painted trussed timber roof, painted and frescoed chapels, a stone-vaulted transept and a tall polychrome apse window filling the chancel with colored light.
