Teatro La Fenice

Gran Teatro La Fenice

Teatro La Fenice is Venice's historic opera house, originally opened in 1792 and repeatedly rebuilt after major fires. It is famed for its horseshoe-shaped auditorium, tiers of private boxes and for premiering many 19th-century operas. The present building is a faithful, restored reconstruction of the 19th‑century house reopened in the early 2000s.

What Teatro La Fenice looked like in its prime.

A tall, rectilinear, pale stone façade facing an open campo, set on a broad flight of shallow steps leading to a recessed colonnaded portico with four Corinthian columns. A balustraded balcony sits above the portico between three arched niches containing statues; a carved phoenix insignia and the inscription SOCIETAS MDCCXCII occupy the central zone. The façade has narrow pedimented windows, a dentilled cornice and street lamps and paving of the Campo San Fantin at its base.
