Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim is a medieval stone cathedral built over the burial site of King Olav II and served as the principal church of the Nidaros archdiocese. Constructed between c.1070 and c.1300 in Romanesque and Gothic forms, it has an octagonal choir, a long nave and a richly sculpted west front and has been a major pilgrimage and coronation church in Norway.

The west façade is a wide, multi-tiered Gothic frontage of grey stone with twin square towers, a large circular rose window set in ornate tracery, three pointed west portals and horizontal rows of sculpted niches filled with standing saints. Gabled pinnacles and carved archivolts articulate the upper gable and nave roofline; a tall green copper spire rises behind the central gable above the octagonal choir. The stone shows medieval tooling and dense ornamental carving across the full elevation.
