Luiz I Bridge

Ponte de D. Luís

The Luiz I Bridge is a double-deck iron arch bridge carrying two levels of traffic across the River Douro between Porto (north bank) and Vila Nova de Gaia (south bank). Built in the 1880s with a 172 m central arch, the bridge's upper and lower decks link the riverside quays and hilltop approaches, forming a prominent infrastructural and visual connection across the valley.

What Luiz I Bridge looked like in its prime.

A broad double-deck iron bridge dominated by a single 172-metre semicircular lattice arch of blue-grey riveted wrought-iron, spanning the green-brown Douro with its arched shadow on the water. Both decks are framed by cast-iron balustrades and lined with tall, decorative gas lamps; decks are paved (asphalt originally suggested) and rest on squared masonry abutments with large marble name-plaques and carved royal shields. Steep granite riverbanks rise to terraces of terracotta-roofed houses and the Serra do Pilar monastery adjacent to the southern end.
