Antonine Wall

The Antonine Wall was a turf-and-earth Roman frontier built across the Central Belt of Scotland between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth. It consisted of a continuous turf rampart on stone foundations, a deep north-side ditch, and a chain of forts and fortlets linked by a Military Way. Most of the wall has weathered away, but sections, fort foundations and distance slabs survive and are visible in places today.

A low, continuous turf rampart standing roughly three metres high on exposed stone foundations, with a broad, grass-lined ditch running along its northern face. The wall crest is a grassy bank, occasionally pierced by upright wooden posts where palisade would have stood. Stone foundations and wing walls of small forts interrupt the line, and a narrow Military Way runs on the south side. The setting is open central-Scotland lowland with fields and belts of trees.
