Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of Incarnation

Iglesia Catedral de la Encarnación

The Cathedral Basilica of the Incarnation (Catedral de Málaga) is a Renaissance-style Roman Catholic cathedral on a rectangular plan with a wide central nave and two aisles. Construction began in 1528 and the building reached its most complete form by 1782, although the south tower was left unfinished. The complex includes a Baroque principal façade, a tall north bell tower, an ambulatory with chapels, cathedral gardens and the adjoining Church of the Sagrario.

What Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of Incarnation looked like in its prime.

A massive rectangular Renaissance basilica in warm honey-coloured ashlar, its wide central nave matching the aisles in height. Low terracotta-tiled vault domes and a broad polylobed apse with triple lower arches and round windows form the roofline. A completed north bell-tower rises as a multi-stage stone campanile with a triple-arched belfry; the south tower is an unfinished stump. The two-level Baroque façade shows three arched portals with marble columns and carved medallions; the cathedral sits amid dense low-rise Andalusian streets and small cathedral gardens.
