Stockholm Palace

Stockholm Palace (Kungliga slottet) is the official royal palace of the Swedish monarch, sited on Stadsholmen in Gamla stan beside the Norrström. Built on the footprint of the medieval Tre Kronor castle and realised from designs by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger with Rococo interiors completed under Carl Hårleman, it contains state apartments, royal apartments, chapels and museums.

What Stockholm Palace looked like in its prime.

A vast rectangular Baroque palace standing on an island edge above the Norrström, with a rusticated stone base and four storeys of pale ochre sandstone façades. The long, symmetrical elevations are marked by regular vertical rows of tall rectangular windows, a pronounced cornice and a low balustraded roofline. Broad stone ramps and a formal outer courtyard meet the street and bridges; the building reads as monumental, masonry-faced and complete at its roofline.
