Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv Monastery of the Caves) is a historic Eastern Orthodox lavra and monastic complex on a hill above the Dnipro River in Kyiv. Founded in the 11th century as a cave monastery, the site grew into a large ensemble of churches, bell towers, cave networks, refectories and courtyards and is a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Perched on a wooded riverside hill, the Lavra in its prime is a sprawling compound of white-washed masonry, low fortified walls, green metal roofs and numerous gilded onion domes clustered over baroque church volumes. A tall multi-tiered bell tower with a gilded cupola punctuates the skyline; terraces and orchards step down the slope toward the Dnipro. Cave-entrances and low annexes sit between churches and courtyards; the whole ensemble faces the wide river and distant bridge.
