RMS Titanic was a White Star Line ocean liner, the second of three Olympic-class ships built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and the largest ship afloat when she entered service. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York she struck an iceberg and sank in the early hours of 15 April 1912, killing approximately 1,500 of the 2,208 people aboard. Her wreck, discovered in 1985 broken in two, lies on the North Atlantic seabed off Newfoundland.

Vast black steel hull 269 m long topped by a white superstructure, four tall buff funnels with black caps raked gently astern — the aftmost a dummy fitted for looks and ventilation. Two 47 m masts carry cargo derricks and a wireless aerial strung the length of the ship. Rows of riveted plates and portholes run the hull; the forward half of A Deck is enclosed behind a steel screen of sliding windows. Twenty lifeboats hang along the boat deck, the bridge and wheelhouse stand at its fore end, electric cranes work the bow and stern well decks, and pine-and-teak decking gleams above anchor chains at the forecastle.

Built in Belfast
Titanic was the second of three Olympic-class liners, conceived in a mid-1907 discussion between White Star Line chairman J. Bruce Ismay and the American financier J. P. Morgan, whose International Mercantile Marine controlled the company. Facing Cunard's fast new Lusitania and Mauretania, Ismay chose to compete on size and luxury rather than speed. The ships went to Harland and Wolff of Belfast, White Star's builder since 1867, at an agreed £3 million for the first two hulls plus the yard's usual five per cent fee. Olympic was hull number 400; Titanic, built to a revised version of the same design, was 401.
The sheer size of the class forced Harland and Wolff to remake its yard on Queen's Island: three slipways were demolished, two of the largest ever constructed were built in their place, and above them rose the Arrol Gantry — 228 feet high and 840 feet long, the work of the Scottish firm behind the Forth Bridge. Titanic's keel was laid on 31 March 1909, and over 26 months the hull took shape as an enormous floating box girder of 2,000 rolled steel plates held together by more than three million iron and steel rivets weighing over 1,200 tonnes.
The work was dangerous in an era of rudimentary precautions: 246 injuries were recorded during construction, and eight men died in the yard and aboard the ship. The centre anchor was the largest ever forged by hand, its 16-tonne head hauled by twenty Clydesdale horses from the Noah Hingley forge in Netherton. Titanic was launched without christening, in White Star tradition, at 12:15 pm on 31 May 1911 before 100,000 onlookers, sliding into the River Lagan over 22 tonnes of soap and tallow. A year of fitting out followed, including an enclosed forward promenade and the new Café Parisien — changes that made her slightly heavier than Olympic and the largest ship afloat.
Engineering the largest ship afloat
At 882 feet 9 inches long and 46,329 gross register tons, Titanic was driven by three engines: two reciprocating four-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines producing a combined 30,000 horsepower, and a centrally placed low-pressure Parsons turbine of 16,000 horsepower turning the middle propeller. The combination, proven on the earlier liner Laurentic, married the economy of reciprocating engines with turbine power while avoiding the uncomfortable vibration that afflicted the all-turbine Cunarders. Steam came from 29 boilers containing 159 furnaces, fed by hand — over 600 tonnes of coal a day, shovelled around the clock by 176 firemen.
The hull was subdivided into 16 primary compartments by 15 bulkheads extending above the waterline, with eleven vertically closing watertight doors that could be shut from a bridge switch, a lever at the door, or an automatic buoyancy mechanism triggered by six feet of floodwater. These features contributed to the ship's reputation as 'unsinkable'. The electrical plant — four 400-kilowatt steam-driven generators — could produce more power than an average city power station of the time, and kept the lights burning until the final minutes of the sinking.
The Marconi radiotelegraph installation was among the most powerful in the world: a 5-kilowatt rotary spark-gap transmitter, call sign MGY, guaranteed to broadcast over 350 miles, worked around the clock by operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride. The lifeboats told a different story. Titanic's 16 davit sets could each handle three boats — capacity for 48 — but only 20 were carried, with room for 1,178 people. That exceeded the Board of Trade's requirement of 16 boats for ships over 10,000 tonnes, yet covered barely a third of the ship's full complement: lifeboats were then meant to ferry passengers to a rescuing ship, not float everyone aboard.
The maiden voyage
Sea trials began at 6 am on 2 April 1912 in Belfast Lough and the Irish Sea: twelve hours of speed runs, turning tests and a crash stop that brought the ship from full ahead to a standstill in 850 yards. Declared seaworthy, Titanic sailed for Southampton that evening. The maiden voyage began at noon on 10 April, and disaster was nearly immediate: Titanic's displacement snapped the mooring cables of the liner New York, which swung stern-first towards her and was stopped about four feet away by the tug Vulcan and Captain Smith's 'full astern' order.
From Southampton the ship called at Cherbourg, where the purpose-built tenders Traffic and Nomadic brought out 274 passengers, and at Queenstown in Ireland, where 123 more boarded. In all roughly 1,317 passengers were aboard — well under capacity, a national coal strike having disrupted spring sailings. The first-class list included some of the wealthiest people of the day: John Jacob Astor IV, Benjamin Guggenheim, Macy's owner Isidor Straus and his wife Ida, and Margaret 'Molly' Brown. Ismay travelled too, alongside Thomas Andrews, the ship's designer, aboard to observe the new vessel's performance.
The crossing itself passed without apparent incident: 484 nautical miles covered by noon on 12 April, 519 the next day, 546 the day after. A coal-bunker fire that had smouldered since before departure was finally put out on 14 April. The ship received a series of warnings of drifting ice near the Grand Banks, including one from the liner Mesaba, but Captain Smith held course at full speed — standard practice at a time when ice was believed to pose little danger to large vessels, and when Smith himself had said he 'could not imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder'.
Fifteenth of April
At 11:40 pm ship's time on 14 April, lookout Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg dead ahead. First Officer William Murdoch ordered the ship steered around it and the engines stopped, but too late: the starboard side struck the ice, and the buckling and separation of hull plates opened the ship to the sea below the waterline. Five of the sixteen watertight compartments were heavily breached and a sixth slightly compromised; Titanic could not float with more than four flooded. Water spilled over the top of each bulkhead in turn as the bow settled.
The evacuation was chaotic. The crew had not been adequately trained, officers did not know how many people the boats could safely hold, and many were lowered barely half-full — on average the launched boats carried 60 per cent of their rated capacity. Third-class passengers were largely left to fend for themselves, and many became trapped below decks. 'Women and children first' was generally observed: about 75 per cent of women and 50 per cent of children survived, against 20 per cent of men. Only 3 per cent of first-class women were lost; 54 per cent of third-class women died.
A little over two and a half hours after the collision the sinking accelerated, the lights went out, and the ship broke in two between the second and third funnels. The stern rose nearly vertical, hundreds still clinging to it, and foundered at 2:20 am. Those in the water — at minus two degrees Celsius — died within minutes; only five were pulled into lifeboats that had room for almost 500 more. The Cunard liner Carpathia arrived around 4 am and rescued roughly 705 survivors. Approximately 1,500 people died, one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a single ship.
The nearby SS Californian became the disaster's most controversial bystander. Stopped for the night in the ice only a few miles away, her officers watched a ship fire eight white rockets, reported it to Captain Stanley Lord, and received no order beyond Morse-lamp signals. Her wireless operator was asleep and was not woken until around 5:30 am, when the ship finally learned of Titanic's loss and steamed to the scene — well after Carpathia had picked up the survivors. Both inquiries found that the ship Californian's crew had watched was Titanic, and that Lord had acted improperly in failing to assist.
The wreck and the long afterlife
Inquiries convened on both sides of the Atlantic — the US Senate's under William Alden Smith, the British Board of Trade's under Lord Mersey — reached broadly similar conclusions: lifeboat regulations were out of date, ice warnings had not been properly heeded, the boats were badly filled and crewed, and the ship had been driven into a dangerous area too fast. The reforms that followed endure: the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, the requirement for round-the-clock wireless watches under the US Radio Act of 1912, and the International Ice Patrol, in whose patrol area no life has since been lost to an iceberg collision.
The loss struck hardest in Southampton, home to four out of every five crew members, and news drew crowds to White Star's offices in London, New York, Montreal, Southampton, Liverpool and Belfast. Of the more than 1,500 victims, only 333 bodies were recovered, most by ships chartered out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, where 150 victims lie buried — 121 of them in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. In Belfast the ship remained a taboo subject for much of the twentieth century, the sinking a blow to the city's shipbuilding pride; only after the Troubles did the city reclaim her, opening the Titanic Belfast visitor attraction on the old slipways for the centenary in 2012.
The wreck was found on 1 September 1985 by a Franco-American expedition under Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard, over 12,000 feet down and in two pieces about a third of a mile apart — proof that the ship had broken up at or near the surface. The bow remains surprisingly intact; the stern is completely wrecked, its decks pancaked. Iron-eating bacteria are accelerating the hull's decay, and in 2023 the seabed-mapping company Magellan produced a full 'digital twin' of the site from some 715,000 3D images.
The cultural afterlife began 29 days after the sinking, when the silent film Saved from the Titanic appeared starring the survivor Dorothy Gibson. Walter Lord's 1955 book A Night to Remember produced the 1958 British film still regarded as the most historically accurate portrayal, and James Cameron's Titanic of 1997 became the highest-grossing film in history to that time, winning eleven Oscars. Memorials stand in Southampton, Liverpool, New York, Washington, Belfast and Cobh — the ports and cities that bore the losses.
