Počitelj Citadel

Počitelj Citadel is a medieval fortress on a karst cliff above the Neretva River, originally built by King Tvrtko I in 1383. The Ottomans later enlarged its defences and developed a fortified settlement below, adding houses, a bath and a mosque. The citadel's dominant feature is the Gavran (captain) tower which overlooks the historic walled town and the river valley that led to the Adriatic coast.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a steep karst rock above the Neretva, the citadel is dominated by a tall, rectangular stone keep—the Gavran (captain) tower—rising above pale limestone curtain walls that step down to the town. Ottoman-era houses with red clay tile roofs cluster against the lower walls; among them sit the settlement's mosque and a bathhouse. The roofline is a mix of low gabled houses and the vertical silhouette of the keep, all built of local light-coloured masonry.

Its story

The story of Počitelj Citadel.

King Tvrtko I of Bosnia built the fortress at Počitelj in 1383 to control the merchant route between the Bosnian interior and the Adriatic coast, which ran via the Drijeva marketplace through the Neretva valley.

The Ottoman Empire greatly extended the fortifications and developed a settlement below, with houses, a bath and a mosque. The citadel's main tower, the Gavran-captain tower, stands on a karst rock hanging high above the Neretva and today overlooks the historic walled town of Počitelj.
