Stari Most

Stari Most (the Old Bridge) is a 16th-century single-arch Ottoman stone bridge spanning the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built by Mimar Hayruddin in the 1557–1566 period, it links the two halves of the historic town and is flanked by two fortified towers, Tara and Halebija. The original was destroyed in 1993 and reconstructed using original materials and techniques, reopening in 2004.

What Stari Most looked like in its prime.

A single, thin lowered semicircular stone arch of pale Tenelia limestone, roughly 29–30 m long and 4 m wide, rising about 24 m above the emerald Neretva. The gently cambered stone deck is paved with ashlar and edged by low stone parapets. Identical pale ashlar fortified towers sit on the river cliffs at each end (Tara to the southwest, Halebija to the northeast). The bridge spans a narrow rocky gorge lined by compact old-town houses and riverside terraces.
