Zvíkov Castle
Zvíkov is an early-Gothic royal castle on a steep rocky promontory above the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers in South Bohemia. Built in the first half of the 13th century and expanded through the medieval period, it combines a massive residential keep, palace wings and strong curtain walls with a prominent cylindrical bergfrit. The site has been restored and is open to visitors.

The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on a steep, tree-covered limestone promontory at the meeting of two rivers, the castle presents pale stone curtain walls with crenellations, connected palace ranges with red-tiled roofs, and a tall cylindrical bergfrit with a conical roof standing to the south. A massive prismatic residential tower (Hlízová) anchors the complex, while arcaded palace facades and twin gates break the wall line; the whole cluster rises directly from rocky banks above reflective river water at its base.
