Idstein Castle
Idstein Castle (Burg Idstein / Schloss Idstein) is a hill castle and later Renaissance schloss in Idstein, Hesse, that served as the residence of the counts of Nassau-Idstein. The complex preserves the medieval bergfried (the so-called Hexenturm), a palas, the old district courthouse and a 15th‑century gatehouse, with a Renaissance outer schloss and Baroque interiors completed in the early 18th century.

A tall, cylindrical stone bergfried stands on a rocky ridge above the town, composed of two stacked drums with small rectangular windows and a band of blind arcading near each upper stage, capped by a conical slate roof and weather vane. Adjoining it is a robust palas and a projecting round turret; the connected schloss buildings have steep slate roofs with dormer windows and timber-framed façades at the street side. A low curtain wall, a 20 m stone bridge over a neck ditch and a small Renaissance garden sit to the outer ward.

The hill castle at Idstein was the residenz of the counts of Nassau-Idstein. Its medieval bergfried — the Hexenturm, or Witches' Tower — is one of the town's oldest buildings and a substantial local landmark, and the complex preserves the palas, the old district courthouse and a fifteenth-century gatehouse. As tastes changed the counts built outward: a Renaissance outer schloss, with Baroque interiors completed in the early eighteenth century.
The Witches' Tower carries a darker weight. At its base a plaque remembers the victims of the witch trials of 1676, listing the names of the 31 women and 8 men killed at the end of the rule of John, Count of Nassau-Idstein.
