The shape it held in its prime.
Bunratty Castle is a massive rectangular 15th‑century tower house of rough grey limestone rubble rising four to five storeys, flanked by two high square angle towers and crowned with continuous crenellated parapets. Narrow vertical slit and mullioned windows are set in the otherwise plain walls; a low central pitched roof with a small timbered roof‑house sits behind the battlements. The principal facade faces a grassy forecourt bounded by a low stone wall; at its prime the stonework and lead/slate roofing were intact and the battlements complete.
