A compact medieval complex dominated by a tall rectangular stone tower set on the north crest of a steep grassy slope that falls to two rivers; a separate round watchtower stands on the south hill guarding the approach. A stone manor house and lower stone service buildings sit adjacent to the keep, clustered on the ridge. The masonry of the tower and ancillary buildings is intact and roofed, the site opening onto parkland and river valleys.

Darver Castle at Readypenny, near Dundalk in County Louth, takes its name from the Gaelic "Dairbhe", meaning oakwood. Following the second stage of the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1171, King Henry II granted 500 acres here — land formerly owned by the church — to Patrick Babe, and the Babe family held Darver for nearly six centuries.
The surviving stone tower was added around 1432, set above a deep slope that drops to two rivers. In 1740 the Babe family sold Darver Castle to Randal Booth, and Booth's descendants lived there until 1980. In 1997 the castle was sold to the Carville family, who have renovated and refurbished it as a luxury hotel, wedding venue and restaurant.
