Tralee Castle
Tralee Castle was a medieval stronghold in Tralee, County Kerry, built by the Desmonds in the mid-13th century and later granted to the Denny family in 1586. It was damaged and rebuilt several times, converted into a manor house after the Williamite wars, and largely demolished in 1826; some remains survive as a ruin.

By its prime around 1700 the site read as a converted medieval castle remodelled into a 17th–18th-century manor house within the town of Tralee. The composition showed surviving medieval masonry, stretches of defensive walling, integrated with later domestic elevations and lower rooflines from the manor reconstruction. The complex occupied an urban parcel, its mixed stone textures and successive construction phases visible across contiguous façades and in exposed ruined sections where demolition later removed parts of the building.

Tralee Castle was built by the Desmond family, likely in the mid-thirteenth century, around the time nearby Castle Maine was constructed, and became a seat of the Earls of Desmond. Damaged in 1580 during the Second Desmond Rebellion, the castle and town were granted in 1586 to Sir Edward Denny.
The Dennys rebuilt it again and again: restored by the younger Sir Edward Denny in 1627, besieged in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and burnt by Irish rebels in 1642, restored by Sir Arthur Denny in 1653, damaged once more in the Williamite War in 1691 and then rebuilt as a manor house by Colonel Edward Denny. In 1804 Sir Edward Denny, 3rd Baronet, attempted to modernise the manor; the works failed, and he directed the demolition of the remaining structure in 1826. Some remains survive as a ruin.
